Manage your marketing

How will you manage your marketing whilst concentrating launching your startup ?

Several recent surveys of recruitment businesses, of all sizes, have revealed that something they all spend time on is their ‘marketing’.

The inverted commas are not because it’s not real marketing. On the contrary. It’s just that there’s an irony in the current situation. ‘Marketing’ in its widest and fullest sense has never had more media opportunities available for it Press advertising, and bus posters, leaflets and fliers, despite rumors of their digitally induced demise, all still flourish. In a well-balanced and integrated campaign they all still have their place.

There’s TV and radio of course. The broadcast media have never been more locally oriented or capable of such specific targeting. They’ve probably never been more cost effective either – when you’re reaching such a specific audience you’re not buying wastage. And both have a god track record in recruitment.

And of course there’s online. The digital media. Ranging from your own website, to job boards, to e mail campaigns to the social media – they’re all platforms that need to be embraced and exploited in the finding of candidates, the impressing of clients and the building of your brand.

But there’s one other medium. And all the consultants and recruitment businesses that were asked eventually admitted it was still key to them. It was the telephone.

Come what may, whatever media choices and creative opportunities abound, it was down to making ‘phone calls when it came to ‘marketing’ the business.

Now this might not appear to be a problem to the ‘would be’, or new, recruitment entrepreneur. Fired up with enthusiasm and drive, totally committed to building the business and determined to succeed theyre – youre – going to man that phone for as long as it takes. You’ll call every contact you’ve ever had, every new name you’ve collected and every business card you’ve brought back from every networking event you’ve been to. Of course you will.

Except, as the boss, youll have a lot of other things to worry about. The IT, the HR issues, the tax man, the payroll, staff matters..and you want to actually do some recruitment today sometime.

Ok. You don’t mind working crazy hours. Do all that stuff and then get on to the phone this evening. No. That doesn’t work. The people you want to call won’t be there in the evening. And you can’t switch it round, because if you man the phone all day, your team won’t be there all evening to catch up on all those other things.

What you need is the funding and support to allow you to get on with the job

Ultimately it’s as simple as that. If you’re properly funded, and soundly supported, the ‘other things’ will be covered. And that’s where we’re very good.
